Portugal reports lowest unemployment since April 2004

LISBON: Portuguese unemployment has been estimated at 7.4 percent for March, the lowest level since April 2004, the National Statistics Institute (INE) announced on Monday.
The INE also revised down the reading for February to 7.6 percent. This is 0.2 percentage point lower than the estimated figure and 0.3 percentage point lower than January’s total.
In year on year terms, February’s score is an impressive 2.3 percentage points lower than February 2017 and 4.5 percentage points lower than February 2016.
The news is particularly positive in that the start of the year is traditionally the low season for tourism, a high-recruitment sector for Portugal.
Strong employment figures for the period thus suggest sector diversification in terms of hiring or a general broadening of Portugal’s tourism appeal. Enditem
