Concern over press freedom

Kathmandu : Representatives of bodies concerned have expressed concern over what they said curtailing of press freedom and freedom of expression by the Civil Code -2074, going to come to force from August 17.
At a programme organised by Nepal press Union and Centre for Media Research-Nepal here on Wednesday, they suggested some correction, saying the Code would create problem from collecting the news to disseminate it.
On the occasion, Lawyer Baburam Aryal said although it was compulsion to formulate laws after constitution, the Civil Code was against the constitution.
Saying any laws against the press freedom and freedom of expression could not be acceptable, Press Union General Secretary Ajaybabu Siwakoti asked to correct such laws immediately.
Likewise, Secretary of the Federation of Nepali Journalists, Ram Prasad Dahal, Vice-Chairperson of Centre for Media Research, Rishikesh Dahal, Chairperson of Online Journalists Association, Shiva Satyal, Press Union Secretary Khila Karki, among others expressed the view that such laws formulated without studying long-term would make its implementation difficult.
