Court convicts Ganesh Lama on money laundering

Kathmandu : The Special Court has slapped one year jail sentence and Rs 14 million in fine to Ganesh Lama, after convicting him of money laundering.

A division bench of Chairman of Special Court Baburam Regmi, Judges Dwarikaman Joshi and Ratna Bahadur Bagchand handed down the verdict on Thursday. According to Registrar of the Court Bhim Kumar Shrestha, the Court ordered to sentence Lama to jail and confiscate properties worth Rs 14 million.

Lama was the candidate of province assembly from constituency-1(A) of Kavre from Nepali Congress. The Anti-money Laundering Investigation Department had lodged the case claiming that Lama amassed Rs 270 million from criminal activities.

Among the charged in the case lodged by the Department, Palsang Lama, Ranju Lama, Binod Lama, Rakesh Lama and Laxmi Lama have got clean cheat from the court.

As per the charge-sheet, convicted Lama owns 205 ropani of land in Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur districts and has Rs 270.1 million in cash earned illegally.
